Home Tips #2: Tips on How to Save Energy

Today, more than ever, almost all people rely on electricity. It has become an essential part of modern civilization and if taken away, could very well shake the very foundation of our society. It is hard to imagine a world without it, so it is no surprise that it comes with a price. Anyone who owns or rents a home would know that one of our biggest expenses is our electricity bills. So today, we are going to help you cut back on your expenses by sharing with you some tips on how to save energy.

Tip # 1: Unplug any unused electrical appliances – one of the biggest and simplest ways to save energy is to unplugged any appliances that are currently not in use. We know what you’re thinking, why do I have to unplug them? Can’t I just simply turn them off? If you are truly serious about cutting back on expenses, then this is the sure fire way to so. A study conducted by the US Department of Energy revealed that unplugging your appliances actually saves you more electricity rather than just turning them off. This is due to the so-called “Phantom Load” which is essentially the energy used by your appliance they are turned off.

Tip #2: Buy Power strips –  What are power strips and why do I have to buy them? Power strips are a piece of equipment that is essentially a row of outlets that are connected and powered by one cord that is plugged into the wall outlet. Now, why do we need to buy one? For two reasons, one,  it helps you with our first tip which is to unplug any unused appliances. The reason why this helps is that rather than unplugging your appliances, all you need to do is to simply flip a switch and it is as you unplugging your appliances. The second reason is that other than protecting you from phantom loads, the more modern power strips have a built-in surge protector which helps defend your electronics from damage caused by power surges.

Tip# 3: Switch your light bulbs to LED – LED (Light Emit Diode) technology saves more energy than regular light bulbs. This is because almost all the energy collected is converted to light and only a small portion of it is lost due to heat. It is this fact that allows LED light to produce a brighter glow than a regular light bulb and saves you money in the process.

Tip# 4: Open your windows – Opening your windows may sound simple but its an efficient way to save money. Windows not only provide a natural source for light but also brings in the breeze from the outside. By just opening your windows you cut back on electric lighting and also air conditioning.

Tip # 5: Use solar power – this has been going on for a while now, but as you know, solar panels can be a great investment for anyone. With solar power, you would rarely have to get power from the main power grid, and just use the power you collected yourself. Some might say that the installation fee outweighs the energy and money you will be saving. But you have no plans on moving anytime soon, then eventually you would break even in your investment and start saving.
